Meetup Groups

Find Others Who Share Your Interests

Recently someone asked me if I had ever been to a meetup group to draw. At the time, I had no clue what that was. I suppose there are several sites that offer similar services but the one they were referring to in particular was found at Meetup. If like me, you’ve never heard of it before, you can open a free account and click on whatever interests you…sports, art, crossfit, fishing, hiking, etc. Join groups that focus on those particular interests and you’ll receive a notification whenever they organize a meetup.

Meetup provides connections to others in your area with similar interests.

When I finally got around to checking out the Meetup phone app, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of local art activities. I found several groups that meet up once a week to draw. Some of them take place at the organizer’s home. Some groups roam between coffee shops, someone’s living room, or a park if the weather’s nice. You bring your own project and draw in the company of other artists. Another group I found is a life drawing group, which I’d seriously like to take part in one day. It offers the chance to join in a group where they have a live model, sometimes clothed, sometimes nude. In typical life drawing fashion, the poses are timed.

Although I have yet to attend a meetup group, it may very well be something I’d like to try out for the new year. It may be fun to just mix things up a little bit, go for a change in scenery, and meet up with other artists in the area.

If any of you have meetup experience and have joined an art group through the Meetup app, let us know what it’s like. Or better yet, if you have experience with particular Meetup art groups, leave your review or recommendations of the group in the comments below.
