The giant girdled lizard, or sungazer lives in self-excavated burrows in the grasslands in South Africa. The sungazers name comes from their habit of sitting at the entrance of their burrows facing the sun in order to thermoregulate. They are primarily insectivores but will eat small vertebrates if opportunity presents itself. They range from 5.9-7.1″ long.
