Great Blue Heron

The great blue heron is a large wading birds found near the shores of open waters in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is rare to find them in Europe but they have been spotted in Spain, England, the Netherlands and the Azores. It’s call sounds a lot like a crow’s call. Males will snap their bills together loudly to attract a mate or to defend a nest site. It’s primary food is small fish but they will also feed on shrimp, crabs, aquatic insects, rodents, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and small birds if the opportunity presents itself. The great blue heron swallows its food whole and has been known to choke if their prey is too large. Talk about your eyes being bigger than your stomach!
