The velvet ant (Mutillidae) is a family of over 3,000 species of wasps whose wingless females resemble large, hairy ants. They have a very dense pile of hair ranging in color from scarlet or orange, silver, gold, or black and white, such as the one pictures here. These are often referred to as panda ants. The velvet ant can be found worldwide but especially in desert and sandy areas.
