Sun Bear

The sun bear is found in tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Their numbers have decreased steadily due to deforestation on a large scale. They are listed as vulnerable as it is suspected that they have declined by more than 30% over the past three sun bear generations. They’re also known as honey bears due to their voracious appetite for honeycombs and honey. They have jet black fur save for a crescent shaped pale patch at the chest. They have incredibly long tongues, 7.9-9.8″ which they can protrude to extract honey and insects. They’re the smallest of bears with males weighing up to 143lbs. The female sun bear is 10-20% smaller.
