Malayan Tapir

This is a Malayan tapir. It is the largest of the five tapir species. It’s easily identified by it’s black and white coat. They range from 5’11-7’10” in length, not counting it’s stubby tail. They weigh 550-710 lbs. Some adults have been recorded as heavy as 1,190 lbs. The Malayan tapir has poor eyesight, making them rely more on their sense of smell and hearing. They spend a majority of their time in the water and are mostly active at night but not strictly nocturnal. They forage for tender shoots and leaves of more than 115 species of plants. Despite their bulk, they can run pretty quickly and can also defend itself with it’s strong jaws and sharp teeth. The young of all tapir species are born brown with white spots and stripes, enabling then to hide more effectively in the forests that they inhabit. They are listed as endangered due to human activity such as deforestation, flooding caused by damming of rivers, and illegal trade.
