Indian Muntjac

The Indian muntjac, also called the red muntjac, common muntjac, or barking deer, is the most numerous muntjac deer species. This species is omnivorous, feeding on grass, shoots, fruits, seeds, birds’ eggs, as well as small animals. It has even been seen scavenging, feeding on carrion. Its call is similar to a bark, usually upon sensing a predator. In addition to antlers, which they can use as weapons, they also have sharp tusk-like upper canines. While being fairly widespread throughout Southern Asia, they are also relatively unknown. The male Indian muntjac has antlers while females have only the bony knobs where their antlers would be. They range from 15-26″ tall and 35-53″ long.
