Honu

Honu, or the green sea turtle’s range extends throughout tropical and subtropical areas around the world. It’s common name comes from the green fat found beneath it’s carapace. It is mostly herbivorous, feeding on sea grass and inhabits shallow lagoons. They spend almost their entire lives submerged but must breathe air occasionally. They can rest or sleep underwater for several hours at a time. There are a number of threats to the honu, among which are poaching, hunting, egg harvesting, collisions with boats, fishermen’s nets, habitat destruction, and pollution. It is a federal offense for unauthorized personnel to come within 10 feet of, kill, or molest, or capture a honu.
