Elephant Seal

The elephant seal breeds annually and  are loyal to colonies that have established breeding areas. They have a distinctive large proboscis which resembles an elephant’s trunk. They are used by males to make loud roaring noises during mating season. The larger Pacific species weighs in at up to 6,600 lbs and 16′ in length, some up to 20′. Females are typically half that size and weight and lack the “trunk”. The elephant seal spends up to 80% of their lives in the ocean.  The deepest recorded dive of an elephant seal was 7,835 ft but average depths are between 980-1970 ft where they hunt for skates, rays, squid, octopus, eels and small sharks or large fish.
