Elephant

The African elephant is the largest land mammal with males standing at 10-13 ft tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 13,330 lbs. elephants replace their teeth (4 molars) four to six times during their lives. Each tooth weighs approximately 11 lbs. As the front teeth wear down, they fall out. The back molars shift forward and make room for the new tooth in back. Between 40-60 years of age, they no longer grow teeth and will likely die of starvation. Their tusks are actually incisors and are used for digging for roots and stripping bark from trees. They are also used as a primary defense weapon. Unlike the Asian elephant, both male and female African elephants have tusks. The elephant is among the world’s most intelligent species. Their biggest threat comes from human poachers.
