Dumbo Octopus

The dumbo octopus, or grimpoteuthis, is a genus of pelagic umbrella octopus that live in the deep sea. They have prominent ear fins which give this species their common name. There are about 37 different types of grimpoteuthis. Their prey includes crustaceans, bivalves, worms on the ocean floor, and copepods (planktonic crustaceans). All dumbo octopus species live at depths 9,800-13,100 feet with some as deep as 23,000 feet. The average lifespan is between 3-5 years. The average size for most species is 7.9-12″ in length. Average weight is unknown.
