Pygmy Hippopotamus

The Pygmy hippopotamus is a small hippo native to the forests and swamps of West Africa. It displays many terrestrial adaptations, but like its larger cousin it is semi-aquatic and relies on water to keep its skin moisturized and to keep its body temperature cool. They are herbivorous and feed on ferns, broad-leaf plants, grasses, and fruits it finds in the forests. The pygmy hippopotamus is listed as Endangered, with fewer than 3,000 remaining in the wild. Their main threats come from loss of habitat, poaching, hunting, and natural predators. They’re only about 2.5-2.7′ at the shoulder and 4.9-5.8′ long. They weigh between 397-606 lbs.
