Cotton Top Tamarin

The cotton-top tamarin weighs less than 1.1 lbs and are one of the smallest primate species. They can be found in tropical and secondary forests of northwestern Colombia. Groups form a clear dominance hierarchy where only dominant pairs breed. The female cotton top tamarin normally gives birth to twins and uses pheromones to prevent other females in the group from breeding. Communication between cotton-tops is sophisticated and shows evidence of grammatical structure.
