There are six species of flamingo. Both Greater and Lesser Flamingo are both from parts of Africa, S Europe, S and SW Asia to NW India. The Greater being the most widespread. The other four are found in S America, the High Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina, the Caribbean islands, Mexico, Belize and the Galápagos Islands. Young flamingos hatch with grayish feathers, but adults range from pale pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta-Carotene obtained from their food supply. A less vibrantly colored flamingo is usually unhealthy or malnourished. The captive flamingo however, can turn a pale pink since they are not fed carotene at the levels they get in the wild.
