The warthog is a wild member of the pig family found in the grasslands, savannas, and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Its name comes from the four wart like protrusions on its head. They serve as fat reserves and are used for defense when males fight. Average shoulder height is 25-33.5″ and their weight ranges from 99-165 lbs for females and 130-330 lbs for males. The warthog is easily identifiable by two pairs of upward curving tusks. The tusks are used for combat, defense, and digging.
