The star-nosed mole is a small mole native to the wet low regions of northeastern United States and the low areas of Eastern Canada. They are easily identifiable by the fleshy pink appendages ringing its snout. They are touch organs, highly sensitive with over 25,000 sensory receptors. Adults are 5.9-7.9″ in length and weigh about 2 oz. Living in complete darkness, they identify food by touch. Their diet consists of worms, insects, and crustaceans. The star-nosed mole is also able to smell underwater, accomplished by exhaling air bubbles onto objects or scent trails and then inhaling the bubbles to carry scents back through the nose.
