The nilgai is the largest Asian antelope and is very common in central and northern India, in either farmlands or scrub forests. It is also found in parts of southern Nepal and east Pakistan. Males appear ox-like with two small, smooth horns with a slight forward curve. Male nilgai can reach upwards of 670 lbs while females can weight up to 470 lbs. They eat grasses, leaves, buds, and fruit. They avoid dense forest and prefer the plains and low hills with shrubs, but may also be found in cultivated areas. Nilgai form same-sex herds when not in breeding season.
