Kangaroo Rat

The kangaroo rat is a small rodent of the genus Dipodomys. They are native to western North America. Their common name refers to its bipedal form. They hop in a similar manner as the much larger kangaroo. They are not related. The kangaroo rat often leaps distances of 6-9′ and they are able to change directions quickly between jumps. On average, they are about 6″ head to butt, with a tail 8″ in length. They are primarily seed eaters but will also dine on vegetation and insects. Like chipmunks, the kangaroo rat will store food in cheek pouches. They also keep caches of food in case of inclement weather.
