The gila monster is a species of venomous lizard native to southwestern United States and northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. It is a large (2′ long), heavy (larger lizards can weigh up exceed 5 lbs), slow-moving lizard. So, despite its venomous nature, the fact that it is slow-moving means that it presents very little danger to humans. Even so, the gila monster is sometimes killed in Arizona where they are protected. It feeds primarily on bird and reptile eggs, but will also indulge in small birds, mammals, frogs, lizards, insects, and carrion. The gila also feeds very infrequently, 5-10 times per year. But when it does feed, it consumes up to a third of its body mass.
