The gerenuk, or Waller’s gazelle, is a long-necked species of antelope found in the dry thorn shrublands and desert in the Horn of Africa and the African Great Lakes region. They have rather small heads for their body size but their eyes and ears are appropriately large. Their most distinctive feature is a long, giraffe-like neck. Only the males have horns. They range from 35-59″ long from head to tail. They’re 31-41″ tall and weigh between 66-99 lbs. The gerenuk seldom grazes but browses on prickly bushes and trees, such as acacias. They can reach higher branches by standing on their hind legs and elongating their necks. They don’t appear to drink water, obtaining all that they need from the plants they eat. The gerenuk is listed as Near Threatened.
