The elephant shrew is a small mammal native to Africa. The elephant shrew gets its name from the long, elephant-like nose and an assumed relationship to shrews. They are not classified with similar true shrews but are ironically more closely related to elephants. They feed on insects and are found all across Africa in every environment. They vary in size from 10-30 cm. They form monogamous pairs. The female chasing off other females and the males chasing off other males even though they only tolerate each other and only for mating purposes. There are approximately 19 different species of elephant shrew.
