The Dusky dolphin is a smaller dolphin breed, easily identifiable by its sloping head which lacks the typical narrow snout of the bottlenose variety. It also has a white underbelly and a dark band that extends down its sides to its tail. The Dusky dolphin is typically 6-6 1/2 feet long and weighs between 150-187 lbs. Males and females are nearly the same size, however the dorsal fin on males is usually more curved. They are very social animals, generally living in pods of 20-500 members, although pods of 1,000 or more members are not unheard of. The Dusky primarily resides in warmer waters of the Southern Hemisphere with high numbers in New Zealand, the Southern region of Australia, The Southwest area of Africa, and in Tasmania. There are small populations of this dolphin living along the Western coast of South America. They enjoy acrobatics and can be seen leaping out of the water and tumbling through the air. They are also known to follow boats closely so they can bow ride (riding in waves caused by boats).
