The secret birthday gift that I have been working on has finally been delivered. Truth be told, I had actually finished about two-thirds of it in the first weekend that I started working on it back in late May. But, I knew that I’d finish way too early and that the anticipation of giving this gift would eat me alive. So, I slowed way down and took my time with the last little bit of it. Coincidentally, it happened to be the most detailed part of the drawing anyway, so it was a good thing that I took my time with it. Still, it’s been sitting there hidden and completed for about three weeks and yes…the anticipation has been killing me!
This drawing is done entirely in pencil and the image size measures 7″x12″. Buddhas and kitties are a favorite topic in our household and this kitty happens to be one of three. Kazu is an adorable, little blonde Burmese with the most loving personality. Obviously, Buddha approves of her sweet nature. This one was a real pleasure to draw. It was one of the rare instances where I could see very clearly in my mind how I wanted this to look from the very beginning. Usually, I have to go through some sort of concept phase where I hash out size, proportion, positioning, etc. This one just came to me as you see it. I knew it from beginning to end and I felt it from beginning to end, every hair, every whisker. There was an unusual connection with this one that drew me back to the table like a moth to a flame. There is always an emotional connection to my work, but as with all things, that intensity varies from piece to piece. This one was unusually strong. I’m not really sure why. I’ve learned to just go with it and not question it. It is what it is.
So at long last, it’s been delivered and I can finally breathe easy. I’m always such a nervous wreck when giving a gift like this! I think maybe especially this one. The birthday girl is a true inspiration. Happy birthday, Stacey Naito. I wanna be just like you when I grow up! I hope your day is a special one. 🙂
