Bighorn Sheep

The bighorn sheep was given its name for the large curved horns carried by the males. Females (ewes) also have horns, though not as large and with less curvature. The bighorn is native to North America and depending on its location, can weigh up to 500 lbs. They live in large herds and typically do not follow a dominant male. Generally, the struggle for dominance occurs during breeding season when males (rams) will fight over females. Rams will walk away from each other, turn and face each other, rear up and charge, smashing horns against each other. The horns may weigh up to 30 lbs. Bighorn sheep are not Endangered and considered to be of Least Concern.
