The ‘Akeke’e (ah-keh-KEH-eh) is part of the Hawaiian honeycreeper genus. It is endemic to the island of Kauai. It’s greenish-yellow with a black mask. It’s beak tips cross over. It uses them as scissors to cut open buds in search of insects. It also feeds on nectar from some trees. It is threatened by the introduction of alien plant species which displace native plants. This leads to a decline in the insects on which the ‘Akeke’e feeds. Avian malaria and fowlpox have also caused a decline in their numbers. They are currently listed as Critically Endangered.
