Axis Deer

The axis deer, or chital is a spotted deer common in South Asia, particularly in Indian forests. They typically weigh from 55-165 lbs, with exceptionally large males weighing in at 240 lbs. Their antlers are shed annually and they keep their spots into adulthood. While they can be found in open grasslands, they prefer forest cover for the shade. The axis deer was introduced to Australia, Hawaii, and Texas. In Australia, they survive only in cattle stations, while Hawaii and Texas populations are self-sustaining.
