‘Alala (ah-la-la), or Hawaiian crow is extinct in the wild. Fossil remains indicate it was abundant on all the main islands. It is speculated that introduced diseases such as avian malaria and fowlpox were probably significant factors in their decline. There are approximately 109 in captivity today in two breeding facilities operated by San Diego Zoo. Attempts to reintroduce captive ‘alala back into the wild have been hampered by predation by the ‘io, Hawaiian hawk.
